Goals and Objectives of the Centre
The goal of the Center is:
- To foster the establishment of lexicography as an interdisciplinary branch of knowledge in Georgia and for this purpose to conduct fundamental studies on various issues of theoretical lexicography;
- To implement corpus linguistics and natural language processing methods in Georgian lexicography;
- To facilitate the conversion of the Georgian language into the modern technological paradigm, which implies: complete digitization of the Georgian language, integration of the Georgian language into international digital translation products or programs, preservation of the applied function of the Georgian language in all modern domains and spheres;
- To support the creation and development of high-quality bilingual lexicographic and corpus material with respect to different European languages, languages of neighboring, as well as economically important countries;
- To work on Georgian terminology;
- To develop cooperation with foreign leading scientific institutes and centres;
- To involve the young researchers of the Centre, as well as MA and Ph.D. students in international projects.
The objectives of the Centre are as follows:
- Creation of an English-Georgian/Georgian-English machine translation program;
- Accumulation of high-quality English-Georgian parallel sentences for the machine translation project;
- Expanding and development of English-Georgian lexicographic resources for their application in machine translation projects;
- Initiation and implementation of bilingual dictionary projects with respect to European languages, languages of neighboring, as well as economically important countries;
- Unification of terminological dictionaries created by the Center in one database using the methodology and technologies of modern term banks;
- Unfolding terminological work at Ilia State University with the active involvement of professors of various fields and MA and Ph.D. students. Encouraging terminological work in various professional associations;
- Introduction, study and implementation of technological platforms based on the use of artificial neural networks in Georgian lexicography.
“The Centre for Lexicography and Language Technologies” has developed and runs the MA program “Lexicography, Terminology and Modern Technologies”.
The Centre has an International Advisory Board, which includes well-known foreign scholars from the following fields: metalexicography, language technologies, practical lexicography and terminology.
Professor Tinatin Margalitadze is the Director of the “Centre for Lexicography and Language Technologies”.
